Autism
A Program for Remediation

Over the past eight years, my colleagues and I have gradually developed a
pediatric  program that helps restore the proper function and the physiological
integrity of the various systems, glands, and organs that impact the
symptomatology of autism.  This program, which I call the Healing Program, was
originally devised as a synergistic set of remediation protocols for autistic
children.  As I implemented it over the years, however, it became clear that the
Healing Program was also an appropriate approach to employ against the
disorders of ADHD, asthma, and allergies – the 4-A disorders – which have
become the new childhood epidemics.

As I implemented the Healing Program in a broad base of the pediatric patient
population, I found that autism, ADHD, asthma, and allergies have many things in
common.

They tend to share similar causative  factors.

They generally respond to the varied, individualized protocols of the Healing
Program.

Sometimes this response is robust and extremely gratifying, and at other times a
response occurs to a lesser degree.  Nonetheless, most children do appear to
improve, at least to some degree, and in many cases the outcomes are
extraordinary.

We can help our children overcome the new childhood epidemics.   And we must
at least try.

The Promise of Biomedical Treatment
The Healing Program is centered around an approach to health care that is
commonly referred to as biomedical treatment.  Biomedical treatment is treatment
that involves biological therapies –  rather than psychological, psychosocial, or
behavioral therapies.  Also, it is focused primarily upon the administration of
noninvasive, nontoxic modalities that generally do not provoke serious side
effects.  These modalities include nutritional therapy, supplementation therapy,
and detoxification.  In addition, biomedical treatment can also include cautious,
individualized use of pharmaceutical and nutraceutical medications.
In all cases of biomedical autism treatment, I also recommend combining the
Healing Program with behavioral therapies.  I do not personally apply these
behavioral therapies, but instead recommend that parents find appropriate
behavioral therapists in their own locales.

THE HEALING PROGRAM
 1.  Nutritional therapy.
 2.  Supplementation therapy.
 3.  Detoxification.
 4.  Medication.

The Healing Program is a pragmatic, medically eclectic approach.  It is not
doctrinaire or rigid. It is not slavish to any strict philosophical precept, other than
the simple principle that children who are suffering deserve to be helped.

It’s up to us, as doctors and parents, to provide that help, even when we must
venture into new intellectual realms.

Rates of autism have been soaring over the past 20 years.  The U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention now estimate that  approximately 1 in 150
children suffer from autism.  This represents an increase during the past 20 years
of approximately 1,500 percent.  There are many theories about why this increase
has occurred.  Some doctors believe that there actually has not been heightened
incidence of the disorder, but only more accurate diagnosis of existing cases.
There is probably some validity to that perspective, because there is currently more
awareness of autism than there has been in the past, and more recognition of
mild cases of autism, such as Asperger’s syndrome.  However, I believe there is
more awareness and recognition now simply because there actually is more
incidence of the disorder.

Most biomedical practitioners tend to agree that the recent spike in autism
incidence is due to
several extremely harmful changes that have occurred in
America over the past 20 years.  These catastrophic changes
are (1)  Toxins
proliferated; (2) Nutrition deteriorated; (
3) Ability to detoxify dwindled.  These
changes, working in tandem,
appear to have harmed our children terribly.

However, I have been able to address the damage done by all four of these
changes with administration of the Healing Program, and the results have been
quite promising in many cases, and extraordinarily positive in some.  When the
harm from these four destructive changes is reversed in a child, the child typically
feels better and functions better.  Many children who have undergone the Healing
Program have moved off the autism spectrum.
In the current biomedical treatment of autism – as well ADHD, asthma, and
allergies – there is finally genuine, evidence-based cause for optimism.

Autism is complex.
But its complexities can often be unraveled.
